From: “Empathy and compassion,” in Current Biology by Tania Singer and Olga M. Klimecki.

Empathy and compassion are two different ways of responding to discomfort and pain from another person or ourselves. Empathy is related to the pain circuitry in our brain. Compassion is related to the reward system. This explains why empathy alone is not enough and can lead to burnout. Compassion training makes us resilient and increases job satisfaction.
